Peek-a-boo coin purse

I’ve been looking for a fun little project to make for the kids in my son’s preschool class before the end of the school year, since they’ll be graduating this year to head to their respective Kindergarten classes.

Because my 5-year-old is a hoarder of all tiny, little things, I thought this tutorial for a little earbud case would make a fun zipper pouch for coins or his other treasures. I dug through my scrap bag to find a big enough piece for a couple of 5-inch squares to try it out. Thankfully, scraps from my recent trivet/potholder set project fit the bill. The only problem is there was *just* enough owl fabric to squeak by with one circle. So, I decided it would be tucked inside as a cute little surprise.

The tutorial was easy to follow, although I prefer to make my own patterns over the hassle of downloads, printing, etc. So, I ran around the kitchen measuring the circumference of bowls, jar lids, and canisters until I found a lid that was roughly 4-1/2 inches. I traced the lid three times on the red fabric, once on the owl fabric, and twice on some scrap fleece (I use it all the time in place of batting and fusible fleece). Other than that, I pretty well followed the tutorial as designed.

Oops! That top fabric is supposed to be facing right-side up. Although this does somewhat resemble a Pokeball.

I did, however, hit a little snag when I wasn’t paying attention and accidentally got one of my pieces turned the wrong way. Ooops! (By the way, it might be time for a new seam-ripper; I think mine is going dull.) On the positive side, I’m getting better at ripping out seams!

Overall, this was a quick little project and super easy to put together. I think it kind of looks like a ladybug when zipped, and I love the cute little peek-a-boo owls on the inside. I know my 5-year-old will want one of his own whether or not I decide to make these for his class (I’m still considering other options).

For now, I decided to keep this little gem for myself (something I always have a hard time doing).  I figure since I’m always digging around looking for change, I can clip it on my purse and keep it handy.
